He thought that they read well; as did I when I read them. We've now played nine games, a simple playtest, three historical re-fights and the five campaign games (list and links in the 'Ancients' tab above).

The unit-based style of the rules suits us. They produce a good deal of ebb and flow, opportunities if you use your troop types well (as I have not with these Romans!) and, most importantly, 'work' when compared against the history— at our level of operation, at least. Not being a fan of loose figures, I really like basing a unit on a single base. Gotta work on them markers though!

It's all based around the unit's combat value, VBU. You get on top of the elegant mechanics quickly. but there are plenty of subtleties that we have picked up by re-reading the rules and playing more games.

Our games have all been completed in four to six turns, so they'd suit a club night easily. Plenty happens in those turns though, as hopefully these reports demonstrate.

I found a couple of excellent reviews of Impetus before we played our first game (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=192875 and http://www.rebelpublishing.net/content/Impetus_Review.pdf). Best of all there is a free 'basic' version available from their website, so you can try before you buy (http://www.dadiepiombo.com/basic2.html).James Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17897755636246185173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8493556920707083758.post-88306658111443054892014-06-25T09:49:49.039+08:002014-06-25T09:49:49.039+08:00Need to upgrade the 173 cm general Peter!!Need to upgrade the 173 cm general Peter!!James Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17897755636246185173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8493556920707083758.post-83214354548373991862014-06-25T09:49:22.173+08:002014-06-25T09:49:22.173+08:00Thanks Phil.
